Category:Primitive Management Areas
From BWCAWiki
A Primitive Management Area (PMA) is a special area in the Boundary Waters that offers even greater degrees of solitude and challenge than the rest of the wilderness. Those wishing to camp overnight in a PMA must have special permission noted on their entry permit. As their name implies, PMAs lack all maintained amenities, such as designated trails, portages, or campsites.
Camping
There are no maintained or designated campsites in PMAs. There are sites that have traditionally been used that offer small cleared areas. There is usually not room for more than one or two tents.
There are no fire pits, grates or latrines in PMAs. Users should bring a small shovel to bury their human waste.
Portages
Portages are not maintained in PMAs. Users should be prepared to "bushwhack" portages, which can be very difficult both mentally and physically. With no trail, campers will have to fight through brush and deadfalls and navigate carefully using map and compass.
