Capitalization
Should "Lake Trout" be capitalized or not? Generally in American English, the common name of a species is not capitalized. However, Wikipedia has species names both capitalized and not for some reason, perhaps following British English or formal biological science convention. What should we do with caps? -- BlueCanoe 12:14, 14 June 2006 (PDT)
- Good question. It seems to be generally capitalized in many species articles:
- American Black Bear (headline but not article)
- Grizzly Bear (headline AND article)
- Peregrine Falcon (headline AND article)
- I'm sure a quick consultation around Wikipedia would probably answer it, or a look at the Chicago or AP Manual of Style (I'm generally an AP guy). Sorry, I'm a little harried right now. I'll try to look into it. -Gerg 13:57, 14 June 2006 (PDT)
- Okay, I am busy, but I had to look. A Google on the subject brought up Wikipedia's extensive policy on it as the first hit!
- Again, not enough time to look through it, but the ultimate answer has got to be in there.
