Cross Bay Lake
From BWCAWiki
This is a paddle-only entry point. Access is via the Cross River (outside the BWCAW) with a 50 and a 40 rod portage to Ham Lake and a 24 rod portage to Cross Bay Lake. You will enter the BWCAW in the northern part of Cross Bay Lake. Many trip options with additional portages. Storm impacted areas. Check fire restrictions just before starting your trip. For more information, please call the Gunflint Ranger Station in Grand Marais at (218)387-1750.
This is a popular starting point to reach Long Island Lake, as well as providing a route to Tuscarora Lake via Snipe Lake.
Campsites
There are two campsites on Cross Bay Lake. There are also four campsites on Ham Lake (which you will arrive at after leaving the landing but before you reach Cross Bay Lake). None of the campsites on Ham Lake are very appealing, but could provide convenient for entries late in the day or if you wish to be positioned for an early exit the following day.
Connections
- 40 and 50 rod portages north (with pond in between) to Ham Lake (outside the BWCAW)
- 60 rod portage south to Rib Lake
- 80 rod portage west to Snipe Lake
