Paulson Lake is a small (126 acres) lake south of Seagull Lake in the eastern BWCAW. It has a maximum depth of 60 feet. The lake is accessed from Seagull Lake via a rough, 515 rod portage, or from the south via a string of lakes and portages beginning at Round Lake. Paulson Lake has very clear water and contains lake trout. At one time rainbow trout were stocked here and attained a large size, but stocking was discontinued many years ago and the rainbows, unable to spawn in lakes, died out.

Name

Originally known as Jap Lake, the name was changed to eliminate the perception of racism. However, the origin of Jap in this case seems to be an acronym of John and Addie Paulson, early homesteaders and miners in the area. The name was officially changed to Paulson Lake to better reflect this history. [1] [2]
