Sawbill Lake is located 24 miles north of Tofte, Minnesota, at the end of the Sawbill Trail. It is located along the southern edge of the main body of the BWCAW.

A Forest Service Campground on Sawbill Lake is operated by concessionaire Sawbill Outfitters, also located at the end of the trail.

From Sawbill lake, one can travel:

West: thru Alton Lake towards the 'Lady Chain' of lakes (Beth, Grace, Phoebe and on to Polly), meeting up with traffic from the Kawishiwi Lake entry point.
North: from Alton or Sawbill to Kelso Lake to the Louse River country
North from Sawbill to Cherokee Lake and on towards Long Island Lake, or then west to the Frost River, or then East to North Temperance Lake and Brule Lake
East thru the "Flame" lakes (Smoke, Burnt, Flame) towards the Baker Lake entry.
